Tracking shrimps and prawns with blockchain
Nueva Pescanova Group, the Spanish Seafood firm, has teamed up with IBM to be able to trace its hunts on the blockchain.
Spanish multinational seafood giant, Nueva Pescanova Group (NPG) has joined IBM to use IBM’s platform which is a distributed ledger to trace its supply chain.
This partnership has already begun and as IBM said it on June 8 and its blockchain technology is being used by the Spanish seafood firm to be able to trace fishing shrimps in Argentina and cultivation of prawn in Ecuador. This traceability platform is a step closer to the United Nation’s Global Dialogue on Seafood Traceability (DGST) standards according to Ignacio González, the CEO of the Nueva Pescanova Group. He said:
“We want to offer our consumers all over the world rigorous and detailed information on the traceability of our seafood products, from their origin until they reach their tables. Now is the time for businesses across the seafood sector to begin addressing the GDST standards.”
Being a major multinational seafood firm, NPG is active in various areas of seafood cultivation, production, processing, and distribution. Using IBM’s platform allows its network members to check the supply chain of the products in almost real-time. This enhances the producers’ savings and cuts the fraudulent activities all around the market world. It also helps meets safety and sustainability obligations.
To seafood customers, sustainability is a significant issue that is of growing interest. According to IBM’s study about Europe Food Sustainability in 2020, knowing the “origin, safety and production” of the seafood rises the willingness of the people to buy seafood by 50%.
This was not the first attempt of a food firm to use blockchain technology for tracking its supply chain. Carrefour, the multinational retail giant, in February 2021, and Nestlé, Dole, and CHO the olive oil giant in December 2020 had joined IBM to enjoy its platform.
